General Summary:

Responsible for the design and development of mechanical components and systems to be used in therapeutic medical devices.


Essential Functions:

  • Design drive train for efficiency and durability in capital equipment
  • Develop early stage concept to commercial design
  • Work closely with electrical/systems engineers to ensure proper integration
  • Design interface with disposable component, interchangeable parts for surface
  • Manage external vendors in the fabrication of components and assemblies, and in the analysis of design
  • Perform or oversee system and component testing (e.g. tensile, fatigue)
  • Write verification test plans, protocols and report, implement testing and root cause failures
  • Create mechanical drawings, specs, and schematics
  • Work with manufacturing engineers to develop assembly instructions and establish manufacturing line
  • Perform user research to inform design decisions

  • Ability to apply user feedback to design solutions
  • Ability to design experiments, analyze data sets and draw conclusions
  • Extensive hands-on experience and approach; ability to rapidly create, troubleshoot, and iterate on prototypes, familiar with basic machine shop equipment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 3D CAD experience (SolidWorks)
  • Knowledge of fabrication processes used in volume manufacturing (e.g. injection molding, casting) Ability to work within schedule constraints and clearly communicate design challenges and solutions


Education/Training/Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years related experience
  • BS required in mechanical engineering or related field
  • Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


  • Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to work with logarithms and exponential functions.


  • Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Works on assignments that are moderately complex in nature where judgment is required in resolving problems and making routine recommendations.


  • Computer Skills:

Basic computer skills are required.

The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The duties may require working in a Controlled Environment Room (CER).
